Things Are Heating Up At Melrose Arch For the 2019 Sasfin Cyclethon

  • Hot 91.9 gets on board for a good cause
  • Cyclists in training are challenged to stick it out for six hours!

The Hot 91.9 FM DJs will join several other celebrities at this year’s Sasfin Cyclethon at Melrose Arch in aid of the Smile Foundation and HospiceWits, and members of the public are invited to join the fun.

There will be six 50-minute time slots available, during which the whole family is invited to hop on a bike and spin their way to a good cause.

The Sasfin Cyclethon is the Smile Foundation’s flagship cyclethon fundraising event. This is the fifth consecutive year that Sasfin is the proud headline sponsor of the event, and that it is being hosted at Melrose Arch.

The event has grown into something of an extended training session for cyclists participating in the plethora of cycling events that take place towards the end of the year. This year, the Smile Foundation is challenging all cyclists in training to try stay in the hot seat for the full six hours.

“It’s a tough challenge but not impossible”, laughs Hedley Lewis, Smile Foundation CEO. “Last year we had 221 participants in the Sasfin Cyclethon, of which quite a number stuck it out for the entire event. Many of these were from the Ride4Smiles team participating in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg cycle race to raise funds for the Smile Foundation. So, it would be great to see other charity and competitive riders coming through and spinning with us for the full six hours”.

All the funds raised on the day are donated to HospiceWits for palliative care and emotional support for terminally ill patients, as well as the Smile Foundation, where the money is put towards covering the costs of weekly facial reconstructive surgeries for children in need. At present, this includes a heavy backlog at state hospitals for cleft lip and palate surgeries, and several burn cases as winter draws to an end.

The Sasfin Cyclethon takes place on Sunday, 6 October 2019 on the Piazza at Melrose Arch. The spinning time slots are 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm and 1pm. The sessions are 50 minutes long with a 10-minute changeover. The cost is R160 per bike per session.
