Ocean Basket Brings The Mediterranean to Melrose Arch

Founded by serial entrepreneur Fats Lazarides in 1995, Ocean Basket has grown into one of South Africa’s most loved seafood restaurant chains. From Ocean Basket’s humble beginning in Menlyn Park to 165 stores worldwide, Melrose Arch is proud to be part of that success with its very own Ocean Basket on the Square (next to Ghazal – use Parking 3 entrance).

A Taste Of The Ocean

Ocean Basket offers an array of Mediterranean-inspired dishes from prawns, sushi and calamari to its famous fish and chips and, of course, their legendary creamy lemon sauce. Visit the Melrose Arch branch with friends and family and share one of Ocean Basket’s bountiful platters. The restaurant can be found right opposite the big screen on the Square, at the bottom of the High Street.

The restaurant recently launched its turning-of-the-season menu and brought in a delicious list of comfort food perfect for those chilly days.

New on the starters menu, visitors will find delicious smoked mussel soup livened up with seasonal herbs. On top of that, there is also a kingklip soup that features roasted tomato and peppers, topped with crispy onion sprinkles. Other added additions include a smoked mussel bowl with a Mediterranean salsa as well as kingklip bites coated in paprika crumbs served with herbed mayo.

Recently the restaurant introduced a string of new salads to its menu.  The crispy falafel salad complemented with creamy versatile avocado offers an explosion of flavours and texture. Another new entry includes the Greek salmon salad with avocado and feta. This beautiful red-orange fish with its high levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids is the perfect salad. Lastly, the Greek whole calamari salad with feta and olives is an excellent source of nutrients and its mild flavour and firm texture make it a great accompaniment to any main meal.

Soft and buttery fish, creamy mussels, calamari tubes, prawns, and a healthy portion of chips and tasty rice – what more could a seafood lover ask for? A welcoming entry into the winter menu includes the crusted kingklip, which comes served with a healthy side salad.

With the introduction of Ocean Basket’s autumn/winter 2021 menu, they have introduced dessert platters to share. These consist of two pasteis de nata, two slices of baklava, two churros, dulce de leche, chocolate sauce, mallow whip and ice cream.

Safety Protocols

Worried about your safety? Ocean Basket has been instrumental in providing the restaurant industry with a free operations protocol based on global best practice and guided by the WHO: all of our restaurants have very successfully introduced international best practices with protocols that enforce social distancing, the wearing of PPEs, twice-daily temperature checks and customer registers.

These protocols are available to view on the restaurant collective’s website.

SASSI Commitment

Ocean Basket is aware that there is global concern over the over-exploitation of seafood resources and the environmental impacts of fishery and aquaculture activities on marine ecosystems. For this reason, we are committed to:

  • Supporting and promoting sustainable seafood choices thereby creating market-driven incentives to catalyse change at sea;
  • Protecting all stakeholders as well as our environment by ensuring our suppliers provide legal and traceable products from sustainable and responsibly managed sources;
  • Enabling consumers to make informed decisions about their seafood choices.
